21 Apr Leading Through Change: Summit Speaker IU Athletic Director Scott Dolson on IU’s Historic Momentum
Registration is now open for the IU Ventures Founders and Funders Network Venture Summit, where Scott Dolson, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Indiana University, will share his perspective on IU’s historic athletic transformation and the leadership lessons it holds for founders and funders alike. The Summit brings together founders, funders, alumni, faculty, and students from across the IU community and is expected to sell out. Attendees can register now on the IU Ventures website.

From IU Football’s rise to national prominence to navigating the seismic shifts reshaping college athletics, Dolson has been at the center of one of the most consequential chapters in IU’s athletic history. We recently caught up with him to preview his Summit session and to explore the lessons that apply well beyond the playing field.
IU Athletics has seen tremendous momentum recently, highlighted by – but not exclusive to – the historic success of IU Football. What has made this moment possible, and how do you think about sustaining that success moving forward?
The historic football success stems from a collective effort across Indiana University, though the centerpiece is undoubtedly Coach Cignetti and his unprecedented cultural transformation. The rise required total institutional alignment; President Whitten, the Board, and leadership provided critical support through the evolving landscape of college athletics. Finally, the IU fanbase has been elite—dominating crowds at the Peach Bowl and the National Championship, while selling out the 2026 season instantly. The synergy between coaching, leadership, and fan support has been the catalyst for IU’s remarkable trajectory.
College athletics is undergoing rapid change—from NIL to conference realignment to new revenue models. How do you think about navigating these shifts while staying true to the mission of IU Athletics?
IU Athletics is guided by its five core principles. These principles drive our decision-making on and off the field, and they have stood the test of time. Even in this new era they remain the bedrock of what we set out to accomplish each year.
Operating a modern athletic department resembles running a complex business enterprise. What lessons from leadership, culture, and team building have been most important in your role?
Working in athletics includes long days, long nights, and often, commitments seven days a week. Considering the intense demands, I’ve always done my best to nurture and support an environment where people enjoy what they do and enjoy being here.
For IU students and alumni—many of whom are building careers or companies—what perspective can they take from the transformation of college sports that applies to leading through change and uncertainty?
The hiring of Coach Cignetti illustrates how the right leadership can accelerate cultural change even in a volatile environment. For anyone leading through uncertainty, the lesson is clear: you must ensure your team understands and embraces your vision, and that you assemble a team capable of turning disruption into opportunity.
